Maria was presented and honored before the City Commission on Monday, June 3, 2013
Detective Maria Llovio, began her career as a sworn Police Officer in 1998. Currently, she serves the Crimes Against Property Unit and has been responsible for investigations against pawn and second hand scrap metal dealing since November 2011. Detective Llovio immediately took on several additional projects and investigations, making her stand out from the rest.
The first order of business was to update the City Ordinance referencing our local second hand dealers and scrap metal dealers. Detective Llovio spoke with City officials and the ordinance was changed. Thanks to her efforts, the City now has restrictions and guidelines which provide better reporting procedures and new ways in helping victims recover their property.
Detective Llovio also manages the FINDER program which gathers information from the pawn brokers, second hand dealers and scrap metal dealers in the area. She manages the sensitive information to make sure that each business reporting information to law enforcement knows the rules and procedures involved with the program. Furthermore, Detective Llovio personally assists the businesses when the system fails. She also acts as a liaison between the detectives and officers to ensure the information is correctly distributed and utilized. Previous experience as a Narcotics Detective helped in her investigation and undercover operations where stolen property was exposed. She developed inquiries leading to arrests and seizure of stolen property. In particular, Detective Llovio investigated the owner of a local gas station. The owner of the gas station held a Second Hand Dealer license and accepted stolen jewelry. After a six month investigation, the owner of the business and his brother were arrested for dealing in stolen property. As a result, stolen jewelry and approximately $400,000.00 in U. S. currency was seized.
Detective Llovio has a positive, professional attitude which reflects in her work. She is a squad leader willing to assist on a moment’s notice no matter the task. She is involved in Community Policing and serves by attending numerous neighborhood meetings and becoming the point of contact for Court Watch.
