Michele was presented and honored before the City Commission on Monday, September 3, 2013
Michele Keeler, Finance, began her career in August 2006 as an Accounting Tech in the Public Works/Utilities department. She processed accounts payable and assisted with payroll functions. In March 2008, she was promoted to payroll specialist with the responsibility of all payroll and personnel functions for Public Works and Utilities as well as job costing.
Beginning in 2010, the Finance and Human Resources departments made a decision to recruit one of the departmental payroll preparers to be cross-trained on running the Finance payroll operation. It was determined that this was necessary as part of our continuity of operations, or COOP plan. In the event of a pandemic or other type of emergency event that could affect the Finance staff from running payroll, the chosen employee could step in at a satellite location and run payroll for the entire City.
Michele was selected for this role since she had extensive experience using the City’s time entry system. She also exhibited a very good understanding of the City’s personnel rules and union contract provisions, and already managed a large departmental payroll.
After shifting some of her job responsibilities at Public Works, she was cross-trained on the critical function of running payroll for the whole City. It was not easy having to balance the two jobs. Her input and willingness to take on additional tasks demonstrated that Michele embraced working in a team environment.
In November 2011, Michele applied for and was appointed to the position of Payroll/Purchasing Coordinator for the City. This was a smooth transition since she had already been cross-trained on the payroll function.
In late 2012, the Finance department’s Administrative Assistant retired. Instead of hiring a new employee for this position, Michele’s time was allocated between payroll operations and Finance administrative functions. This helped to tighten up some of the processes and made them more efficient and effective.
Michele Keeler is a dedicated employee who serves the City employees with excellence and pride! Michele’s commitment and efforts will be honored at the September 3, 2013, City Commission meeting. Congratulations!
