Shelli Freeland Eddie has practiced law in the State of Florida since 2004. She began her career as an Assistant State Attorney with the Twelfth Judicial Circuit of Sarasota County, where she spent nearly 6 years prosecuting juvenile and adult offenses. Afterwards, she practiced in the private sector in the areas of general civil litigation, family law and insurance defense. In 2012 Attorney Eddie opened her solo law practice, The Freeland Eddie Law Group, P.A. Her practice areas include Marital and Family Law, Criminal Law, and Estate Planning. Her office is located in the North Sarasota community of Newtown, and she practices on the West Coast of Florida from Pinellas County down to Naples.

Attorney Eddie provides pro bono legal services to The Women’s Resource Center of Sarasota County and More Too Life, Inc., where she provides assistance to women in various stages of crisis, including domestic violence, human trafficking, homelessness, and those returning to the community from extended periods of incarceration. In 2014 she volunteered with the Sarasota County Bar Association’s Diversity Committee to establish the Law Academy at Booker High School, and serves on the foundation Board of Directors. She has been honored by Biz941 Magazine as one of the “2014 People to Watch”; the Black Business Investment Fund for its 2016 Business Leadership Award; and was a 2016 “Women of Light” Award Recipient from the West Coast Center for Human Development. President Barak Obama’s Administration also honored her with the 2016 Presidential Award for Community Service.

In 2015 Attorney Eddie was elected to a 4-year term as a City Commissioner for Sarasota’s District 3, the first time in Sarasota’s history that an African-American candidate has ever been elected outside of District 1, the city’s predominantly minority community. In 2016 she was elected by her colleagues to serve as Vice Mayor of the City of Sarasota. In 2017, she was appointed Mayor of the City of Sarasota. Attorney Eddie is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She is the daughter of Thomas and Martha Bullitt, and has one brother, two nieces, and a large extended family, to whom she is eternally grateful for their lifelong love, prayers and support.
